The astronomer

About This Project

Together with The geographer, The astronomer forms an unlikely pair within Vermeer’s limited oeuvre. Within the prominence of female figures and everyday activities, these two paintings showcase great technical exquisiteness, with the scientific endeavours carried out by two men drawing the viewer’s attention.

One of the Vermeerian characteristics that most fascinated Montoya was how the protagonists of Vermeer’s paintings seem absorbed in their everyday tasks and the way in which the Dutch master portrayed this in their faces. The astronomer y The geographer are two paintings that perfectly exemplify this ability.
